Grandparents’ Day

“Blessed be the ties that bind generations.” Unknown.

We pride ourselves on the relationships that we build with our children and their families. We also recognise that our children’s grandparents play a huge role in supporting parents with childcare and nursery. On the 6th of October 2013 it was National Grandparents Day.

gpd1We thought that this was a perfect time to welcome our grandparents in to our nursery for a play and stay session and to share a ‘high tea’ with the children. In the morning the children and staff were busy making scones, weighing out the mixture and talking about their special times at Nan and Granddad’s house! The children then rolled out the scone mixture and talked about how ‘sticky and fluffy’ it was.

When the scones were cooked we put them out with some cream and jam on special plates. The children easily waited for our special guests to arrive. Our grandparents came and sat with the children as they all ate their delicious scones.

It was lovely to see the children chatting away about their nursery in the pre-school and toddler room. In the baby room Hughie sat with his Nan Sue and granddad Carl. Sallyann talked to them about what activities we planned for Hughie based on his interests and what his mummy and daddy told us.

gpd2After all of the delicious high tea was eaten and enjoyed by all, we shared some wonderful creative (and messy) activities with our grandparents. In the baby room the children were decorating mini houses by collaging and sticking different materials to them. In the Toddler room the children were creating wonderful paintings using conkers that the children had brought in from home. In the pre-school room the children mixed their own paints. They then used these to paint mini houses that Hugo’s mummy, Sarah had kindly donated.

When the children had finished painting they wanted to take their granddads out to play in our garden. The grandparents were fantastic, building imaginary aeroplanes because Ava wanted to go to Singapore. The session was wonderful and we will be regularly inviting our grandparents in to nursery to share their brilliant life experiences with us all!
