In response to a parent request pre-school have planned a safety week. This included a visit from two of the local Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs).
We welcomed PCSO James and PSCO Lorraine to join the children at our afternoon circle time. This was to introduce the children to the role they have in supporting the community as well as how to keep the children safe.
Within this they covered road safety, car safety and stranger danger. Throughout this experience the PSO shared lots of ideas to support the children with their awareness of stranger danger.
We also discussed what to do if the children were to get lost. They practiced sharing their full name as well as the street that they live on. An important message for the staff was to revisit the theme of ‘people who help us’ with the children, on a regular basis, to emphasise that these people help to keep us all safe.
In response to this visit the practitioners will be encouraging the children to discuss their names and addresses with their peers. We will also be discussing various other services that support us such as doctors, nurses and fire-fighters to extend the children’s knowledge of the world around them.
